Kailua:

New Windward Tsunami Maps
February 27th, 5:59 am: Most people were sleeping when civil defense sirens sounded that an impending tsunami was approaching at more than 500 miles per hour. Unfortunately, not everyone heard the warning sirens. Some civil defense sirens in Kailua were very faint or did not sound at all, and the next day I contacted the Hawaii State Department of Defense to address the problem. We are lucky this event turned out to be just a drill. Early warning is often the only tool that will save lives in threatening situations, and next time we must be better prepared.
The City and County Department of Emergency Management and State Civil Defense have revised our tsunami inundation zone maps. These new maps identify the tsunami evacuation zones for Kailua and Waimanalo. If you live makai of the tsunami line, when the civil defense sirens sound, you should evacuate to higher ground.
