The City and County of Honolulu will soon choose a site for a new landfill to handle Oahu’s trash for the next three decades – but we cannot wait until the last minute to begin organizing in opposition to a landfill that may permanently impact our community. Sign the petition to prevent a new landfill in Windward Oahu – and make the city consider more sustainable long-term alternatives like waste-to-energy conversion. Find out the latest about the Landfill Selection Process at the Landfill Selection Committee Website.
The Alternatives
Instead of adequately exploring modern alternatives, the City is moving ahead with plans to simply build a new landfill – outdated, expensive and unsustainable. New technologies used in dozens of major cities around the world such as plasma-arc gasification have been proven to vaporize everything from solid waste to construction debris and even sewage, converting it to electricity and producing slag – inert byproduct that is mixed with asphalt to pave streets. Sustainable technologies such as these are the logical next step forward for an island burdened with growing trash, and short on energy and local resources.
The last time alternative options such as these were seriously explored was 2003. Since then, modern solutions for handling municipal solid waste have been scaled up and adopted by cities around the world. Before we commit ourselves to paying for another landfill for the next 30 years, sustainable long-term options must be thoroughly examined. This started as a petition to prevent a new landfill in Windward Oahu, but it has become a statement about how we choose to handle our waste. It’s up to us to make our voices heard and stand ready to oppose a temporary landfill that could permanently impact our community – especially when there are better alternatives that can solve the same problem.
